“The opposite of addiction is not sobriety, it is connection.” – Johann Hari
Recovery Cafe is a community of people who have been traumatized by homelessness, addiction and other mental health challenges coming to know we are loved and that we have gifts to share. We seek to promote the following guiding principles in all aspects of our work and community: to connect with divine love in ourselves and others, show respect, cultivate compassion, practice forgiveness, encourage growth, and give back. Recovery Café was founded on the truth that all lives are equally precious and that everyone has gifts needed by the whole. Recovery Café Members are in recovery from the traumas of homelessness, addiction, and other mental health challenges. Inclusion is primary to our work. While we know that the Members of our community have overcome significant hurdles in their lives, we recognize that advantages and barriers exist, and as a result, we do not all start from the same place.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, here’s what a day at the Cafe might include: two nutritious, hot meals; latte hour, where volunteer baristas make delicious coffee any way you like; conversations with community volunteers and new guests; a writing, art or Yoga class; and a warm and inviting space to be in community with one another. Since March 2020, we have shifted and adapted our programming to continue meeting the needs of our community. We switched to providing to-go meals seven days a week and moved to telephone and video recovery support for both individuals and groups. We also began hosting monthly Resource Connection Days, where we provide essential needs such as food, bus tickets, hygiene items, and clothing, as well as connection to nonprofit partners in housing, employment, and healthcare.
We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support our community has shown us over this past year. We cannot do this vital work without you. If you would like to learn more about our current volunteer opportunities, we encourage you to see our Volunteer Page. If you feel called to donate, please see our In Kind Donation Wish List and our Donation Page. Thank you for supporting the loving work of the Cafe!
